Denver & Rio Grande Western RR
C-19 Class Locomotives (340, 346, & RGS 41)
Our Quick Pic Book series shows the subjects in extensive black & white photographs which have often been digitally edited to best exhibit the details.
The C-19 Class of locomotives was originally built for the D&RG Railroad by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1881 as their largest Consolidations on the road for use in helper service up over Veta, Cumbres, & Marshall Passes 4% grades. Originally they carried the road numbers D&RG 400-411 and were considered Class 70. Near the turn of the Century, the D&RG had a need for standard gauge motive power so some of them were re-gauged to standard gauge for a few years before being returned to 3' gauge. The RGS had picked up three of the Crystal River Locos and traded them to the D&RG in 1916 for 2 of the C-19's with an option on a 3rd that was never taken. During the 1923/24 restructuring of the D&RG into the D&RGW Railroad, the Class 70 & 74 locos were merged into the C-19 Class. By 1940, 2 of them had been sold to lumber companies and by the end of World War 2 only 4 remained but in 1951, the 345 was used in the movie Denver & Rio Grande in the wreck scene derailment that caused it to be scrapped. The others met their final fate by the end of 1952. Walter Knott got two C-19's for his California Berry Farm and Montezuma Lumber (ex-DRGW) 346 was bought by Bob Richardson, founder of the Colorado Railroad Museum.
