The Berkshires that ran on the Nickel Plate were, and still are, considered
some of the nicest looking steam locomotives ever built.

The wheel arrangement came about from a designer expanding the standard WW1 USRA Mikado giving it more firebox area and thus more boiler area. These locos were among those in the country that are considered the "Superpower" steam locomotives. This book shows one of the members of the S2 class in great detail
and includes a copy of the actual mechanical departments folio drawing of them.
